How to set up Quality Profiles (French)

aka How to Set Up Custom Formats to Get French Audio and/or Subs

This guide is created and maintained by Someone Said "Nice"?

Cette page est aussi disponible en Français : Guide en Français.

Basics

It is quite important that you follow and understand what is envisioned by TRaSH's guide:

Please read those two sections before continuing the guide as they hold important information. The rest of this guide will assume you did.

Tip

TRaSH created a flowchart to make your decision easier. Remember that this chart does not include any of the following Custom Formats, and you will still need to read this guide to get MULTi releases.

FAQ

I am not French from France but from Canada, does the guide still work?

Yes, the guide does accommodate for all types of French: VFF, VFQ, and VFB (even though this one is quite rare). Just make sure you check the scoring of the French Audio Versions section.

I am only interested in getting French subs (VOSTFR)

Please follow the Want Original with subs (VOSTFR) profile.

Can I get HDLight or 4KLight?

Probably not, this guide is not geared toward these specific types. If space is an issue for you, prefer Web-DL or 720p Blu-ray releases.

FlareSolverr?

Please refer to the How to set up FlareSolverr section.

Prowlarr specific settings

Indexers - Replace MULTi by another language in release name option

Prowlarr allows MULTi to be replaced by another language. This option is great in theory but will lead to false positives regarding the French audio CFs. Please prefer using the Radarr-specific settings "Indexers - Multi Languages option" below.

Indexers - Replace VOSTFR and SUBFRENCH with ENGLISH option

This option should not be used, mostly because you lose some information regarding the release. Moreover, VOSTFR does not mean that the audio is in English but rather it is the Original audio, meaning it could be Spanish, Korean, etc.

Indexers - Replace VFQ with FRENCH

Same as for the MULTi option, this will lead to false positives regarding the French audio CFs. Keep it disabled.

Screenshot example - [Click to show/hide]

French Prowlarr specific settings

Radarr specific settings

Media Management - Standard Movie Format and Movie Folder Format

Please have a look there: Recommended naming scheme.

Movie format/folder with French movie name

Radarr supports the ISO-2 naming convention for naming a movie, so replacing {Movie CleanTitle} with {Movie CleanTitle:fr} will change the name to its French version.

Indexers - Multi Languages option

In Radarr, you can tell that MULTi in an indexer means that a release possesses at least certain audio. For the purpose of this guide, you will select Original and French. This option should only be used for French indexers. Doing so in more "international" indexers can create false positives with the French Audio CFs.

If you do not see the option, it is because you need to activate the "Advanced Options" of Radarr.

Attention

All the used scores and combinations of Custom Formats in this Guide are tested to get the desired results while preventing download loops as much as possible.

From experience, most of the time when people change scores or leave out certain CFs that work together - they end up with undesired results.

Quality Profiles

Getting the Right Language Profile

  • Want Original with subs, or VOSTFR: You only want Original audio (English, Spanish, Korean, etc.) and French subtitles.
  • Want MULTi but will take French if unavailable, or MULTi.VF: You want Original + French audio tracks, with a fallback to French audio if both are unavailable.
  • Want MULTi but will take Original if not available, or MULTi.VO: You want Original + French audio tracks, with a fallback to Original audio if both are not available.
Profile Both Original + French audio Only Original Audio Only French Audio English Subs French Subs
VOSTFR ❌ ✅ ❌ ⚠ ✅
MULTi.VF ✅ ❌ ✅ ⚠ ⚠
MULTi.VO ✅ ✅ ❌ ⚠ ⚠
  • ✅ What the profile is trying to get
  • ❌ What the profile is trying to avoid
  • ⚠ Not the main purpose of the profile but can happen

For the VOSTFR profile, it is recommended to get Bazarr up and running

To do so, follow the Bazarr Setup Guide. Bazarr will help you get French subtitles when no VOSTFR releases are available.

French Audio Versions

Those are all optional and only there to rename your release or to avoid getting a certain type of French audio. Examples:

  • You prefer to have both VFF and VFQ, known as VF2 audio; in this case, you will score VF2 at 101 and keep the others at 0 (default).
  • You prefer VFF over VFQ; in this case, you will score VFF and VF2 at 101, set VFI to 0 (default), and VFQ to -101.
  • You prefer VFQ over VFF; in this case you will score VFQ and VF2 at 101, set VFI to 0 (default), and VFF to -101.
  • You absolutely do not want VQ audio; in this case, you will set it to -10000.

Indexers

Not all indexers report the type of French Audio a release has. Therefore, you can still get unwanted French audio. Scoring these CFs can also create download loops; please read the warning below.

Attention

It has been proven that raising the score of an audio to more than 101 (except for VOSTFR) has a higher chance to lead to download loops and therefore is not recommended. Similarly, lowering the score of an audio to less than -101 (unless absolutely not wanted as in the example) has a higher chance to lead to download loops and therefore is not recommended.

HD Bluray + WEB (1080p)

Basic Settings

Make sure you merge the Blu-ray and WEB qualities into one group under your Quality Profile's qualities. This is due to the fact that potential releases with French audio may not exist in WEB. The reason why we didn't select the WEB-DL 720p is that you will hardly find any releases that aren't done as 1080p WEB-DL.

Make sure you don't check the BR-DISK.

Info

The order listed in the profile matters even if a quality is not checked, for example if you have a 1080p version but wanted the SD version, Radarr will reject all SD results because 1080p is listed higher than SD even though 1080p was not checked.

Qualities at the top of the list will appear first in manual searches.

  • Qualities higher in the list are more preferred even if not checked.
  • Qualities within the same group are equal.
  • Only checked qualities are wanted.

This is why it's recommended to move the selected quality to the top of the list.

Breakdown and Why

  • BR-DISK: This is a custom format to help Radarr recognize & ignore BR-DISK (ISO's and Blu-ray folder structure) in addition to the standard BR-DISK quality.
  • LQ: A collection of known low-quality groups that are often banned from the top trackers due to their releases' lack of quality or other reasons.
  • LQ (Release Title): A collection of terms seen in the titles of low-quality releases that are not captured by using a release group name.
  • FR LQ: A collection of known low-quality French groups that are often banned from the top trackers due to their releases' lack of quality or other reasons.
  • x265 (HD): This blocks 720/1080p (HD) releases that are encoded in x265.

If you have also added x265 (no HDR/DV) to your Radarr,
then one of them should be scored as 0 in your quality profile.

  • 3D: Is 3D still a thing for home use?

  • Extras: Blocks releases that only contain extras
  • AV1: This blocks all releases encoded in AV1.

AV1 encodes are currently targeting small file sizes, rather than good visual quality.

    • This is a new codec and you need modern devices that support it.
    • We also had reports of playback/transcoding issues.
    • No main group is actually using it (yet).
    • It's better to ignore this new codec to prevent compatibility issues

Breakdown and Why

  • The reason why these Custom Formats have a score of 0 is because they are mainly used for the naming scheme and other variables should decide for movies if a certain release if preferred.
  • BCore, CRiT and MA are the only ones with a score because of their better source material, or higher bitrate and quality compared to other streaming services.

Breakdown and Why

  • Bad Dual Groups: [Optional] These groups take the original release and add their own language track (e.g. AAC 2.0 Portuguese) as the first track. Afterward, FFprobe would determine that the media file is Portuguese. It's a common rule that you only add the best audio as the main track. Also they often even rename the release name into Portuguese.
  • EVO (no WEBDL): This group is often banned for low-quality Blu-ray releases, but their WEB-DLs are okay.
  • No-RlsGroup: [Optional] Some indexers strip out the release group which could result in LQ groups being scored incorrectly. For example, a lot of EVO releases end up with a stripped group name. These releases would appear as "upgrades" and could end up getting a decent score after other CFs are scored.
  • Obfuscated: [Optional] Use these only if you wish to avoid renamed releases.
  • Retags: [Optional] Use this if you want to avoid retagged releases. Retagged releases often are not consistent with the quality of the original group's release.
  • Scene: [Optional] Use this only if you want to avoid SCENE releases.

IMAX Enhanced

IMAX Enhanced: Get More Picture Instead of Black Bars.

IMAX Enhanced exclusive expanded aspect ratio is 1:90:1, which offers up to 26% more picture for select sequences, meaning more of the action is visible on screen.

If you don't prefer IMAX Enhanced then don't add it or use a score of 0

Note: The Advanced Audio Custom Formats aren't used in the HD Bluray + WEB profile, as HD Bluray Encodes do not often come with HD audio. If you want HD audio, we would suggest going with a Remux or UHD Encode.

HD Remux (1080p)

Information Regarding HD audio

It should be noted that many problems can arise from this profile if you use the HD audio Custom Formats, as:

  • French Scene rules assert that the French audio should be the first (default) audio in a MULTi release.
  • The rules state that only the best audio (whether original or FR) should be mentioned in the title.
  • Some movies (and TV shows, mostly from the pre-streaming era) lack an equivalent FR audio track to the original audio's highest quality one.

Resulting in the following:

  • The quality of the audio indicated in the release's title might not refer to the French audio.
  • The French audio could be of lesser quality than the one mentioned in the title.
  • Radarr will only score pre-import audio based on the release title, and post-import based on the release's first (default) audio (after ffprobe).
  • The final score for the release can be lower than the pre-import.

Tip

This is why the Group tiers exist; they try to get hold of the groups that tend to provide the best original and French audio for a release. However, it is not infallible, and, once again, a movie may not have an equivalent FR audio track to the original audio's highest quality one.

Basic Settings

Make sure you merge the Blu-ray and WEB qualities into one group under your Quality Profile's qualities. This is due to the fact that potential releases with French audio may not exist in WEB.

The following Custom Formats are optional:

Audio - [Click to show/hide]

Why should I choose All Audio formats?

  • You have a hardware media player device and an audio setup that supports ALL HD Audio (TrueHD, DTS-X, DTS-HD, etc).

AppleTV doesn't passthrough HD-audio, If you use infuse it's still limited!
    please check I've a AppleTV

  • You've chosen a profile that includes Audio Formats. You should use all the Audio formats with Remuxes/UHD Encodes.

  • You should add ALL the Audio formats - don't leave any of them out!
  • Audio transcoding has a low impact on your server. If your server can't handle audio transcoding, consider choosing another quality profile.

!Audio Formats Flowchart

  • Passthrough: The preferred method if you have an audio setup (AVR/Soundbar). This mode will send the audio signals without any alteration or processing.
  • Direct Play: The client supports the container, video stream, and audio stream natively. The Plex server simply sends the media file as-is to the client. This uses very little CPU power.
  • Transcode: The client does not support the video stream and/or the audio stream. The Plex server re-encodes the video, audio, or both into a compatible format. Transcoding video uses a lot of CPU power, but transcoding audio uses little to moderate CPU power.
  • Decodes: Decompresses the audio before sending it to your AVR/Soundbar.

Am I losing any quality by using LPCM? - [Click to show/hide]
  • No. Since LPCM is a lossless format, using it will result in no loss of quality. What your ears hear will be exactly the same. The only difference is your receiver will recognize the audio stream as PCM instead of Dolby/DTS.
  • LPCM will discard object and spatial metadata. (TrueHD Atmos, DTS-X)

Should I block certain audio formats because something in my setup doesn't support it? - [Click to show/hide]

If you have chosen a profile that includes Audio Formats, it's somewhat pointless to lower the scores or block certain audio formats since 95% of the Remuxes and UHD Encodes provide HD audio formats such as TrueHD Atmos, TrueHD, and DTS-X.

So you have 2 options.

  1. Choose another quality profile that doesn't include audio formats such as HD Bluray + WEB or 2160p WEB-DL.
  2. Accept the limitations of your audio setup (AVR/Soundbar) and/or your hardware media player device.

Note: French Scene groups are included as a fallback if you really want their releases despite a potential loss in quality. Either set the CF score to 1500 (default) or 0 depending on what you want to achieve. Not including them may hinder your capacity to get releases with French audio.

The following Custom Formats are optional:
